Well, I hadn't seen the kind of transition animations with what I assume to be the equivalent of a Spec512 image (switch colours programatically for 66% of the CPU time). Yes, one can do the same idea by masking off pixels on an ST, and they probably precalculate, but I found it to be a clever idea I hadn't seen before.
As to C64, I don't know, but I did program a 6502 (BBC B) and I find their zoomer code and 3d quite impressive for an 8bit machine. I don't know how the video ram is laid out on the c64 so it may indeed help.
