Freemint is just a core. It's not based on Unix. Same thing with Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD, OSX or whatever. It's the tools and the posix compatibility of the core that makes them all un*x-ish. Internally these systems are very different, so there is no such thing as unix drivers. Anyway, that's not the issue.

Again, I agree - a good place to start would be the Linux or NetBSD sources. I think Didier looked into this a while ago, as did I. My own conclusion was that A: it's a huge task for a single person, and B: I personally had no use for it. Afaik Didier is not working on it atm.
