evil, your post reminded me the case of Papyrus - when you compare it to Word its unbelievable fast, it takes unbelievable low amount of memory etc... So, in my opinion, this is the proof software has not to be slow&large&stupid just because offers a lot of functions and great user comfort.
nowadays everyone says OOP is the only solution, everyone is looking for faster and faster way of programming its products (C#, Java, Python, Ruby...) but doesn't see that second side then.
