Power requirements measured...
Posted by: Coda Jul,01.2005-23:03

Well you might find this to be a surprise, maybe not.

Instead of making my own tester, I bought a power meter from Maplin (code L61AQ) & at manufacturers website: http://www.prodigit.com/e2000m.htm - because it had useful functions, would be easier to use, a lot more accurate, and is a bargain (I think so) at £25.

Tested on the Falcon...

Total Power drawn: 38W !!!

I even ran benchmarks, ran TOS, MiNT, to see if I could get it to go higher. The only thing that did it, was opening the CD Tray, which took it up to 42W while the tray was moving :-)

So. From this you can deduce that an expensive 400W modular PSU is TOTALLY UNNECCESARY, VERY BIG, and a waste of a 100 bucks. Go for quality over quantity, stable and accurate output voltages are what is needed. I will be looking for another V1.3+ XBOX PSU to put in my Falcon, they are rated at 96W, and are good quality.

FYI, my Falcon comprises:
CT60 rev6 060 @80mhz / Bus @25Mhz / 64mb PC100 / 14MB SIMM
300W ATX PSU (going in the bin!)
10GB Seagate IDE (12V 0.22A, 5V 0.57A)
Aopen IDE CDRW Drive
1.44Mb Floppy Drive
TT Keyboard
