Just do as you suggested in the first place, it will work fine. However, only needed for the ABE upgrade, the SDR can be updated with the card in place (I always do it in 030 mode though, not sure if it's really needed, but updating the fastram controller while the fastram is in use seems to be a bit risky to me).
