Ethernat & Supervidel news
Posted by: Instream Dec,13.2010-17:40

Since Henrik's server in his closet is out of order right now, we can't add news to nature.atari.org. Just wanted to tell you about the last few weeks' progress.

While trying to fix peoples' broken EtherNats we found some minor errors in the LAN driver code, but also a big error in the CPLD code. This error sometimes causes random crashes when the EtherNat answers interrupts, since it is fooled into answering an MFP interrupt, which has the same priority level as all CT60 expansion boards do (i.e level 6). It may not be noticed during normal surfing, but when floodpinging we almost always got a crash at a random time about 10-20 minutes after starting. Sometimes much sooner. After fixing the bug we have at most floodpinged for 3 hours without any problems. That amounts to about 15 million packets in each direction.

If you want to upgrade your EtherNat to the new version you need a Xilinx download cable connected via USB to a PC (or the older parallel port version). Then you need to download and install the free Xilinx Webpack. The version is not important.

The JED-file, which is the binary file to program the CPLD with, will be put somewhere on our server when we get it up and running again (soon).

We will also put the new LAN driver there, and eventually check in the code changes to the Freemint CVS.

On the SuperVidel we have managed to integrate an open source Ethernet MAC controller (from OpenCores.org). Yesterday we managed to send an ARP packet using the Svethlana ethernet expansion board, using that MAC controller. After we get reception of packets in place too, we can convert the EtherNat Mintnet driver to use the new hardware.

The main purpose of the Svethlana board is to make it unnecessary to use an Ethernat when you want to fit the CT60+SuperVidel in the original falcon case. Or you could keep the Ethernat but only use it for USB. The Svethlana board is screwed at the back of the falcon case, and connects via a flat cable to the SuperVidel.

When we have verified the Svethlana hardware we can go on to the final steps of preparing the SuperVidel for production. Since the Supervidel is SW-upgradable without any cables needed, we don't have to develop every last feature before production and distribution.

/Torbjörn and Henrik
