Notes on CTPCI/Ethernat
Posted by: mikro Apr,11.2010-12:38

Hi,

I think it could be useful also for others, in times when more people receive their CTPCIs... some notes/hints/facts:

1. As mentioned in previous post, currently Flash060 is unable to flash new JED files for CTPCI, it can do it only for ABE/SDR for CT60. I assume flashing from PC does work as Rodolphe is using that.

2. Same as Thomas, I'm unable to get the ABE/SDR version right. I've flashed it from 030 mode via JTAG cable with the latest FLash060 plus ABE/SDR 7A from Rodolphe's site. On the other hand, I did see guys at Atariada with correct ABE/SDR versions when booting... so it's certainly some bug in Flash060. Question is if I have still 5A (i.e. flash was not done at all) or 7A (with wrong numbers...)

3. Be fucking careful when putting anything into Falcon, first disconnect any power cables, triple check before connecting again. I've accidentally put Ethernat one pin more to the right (yeah, I'm blind) and I blew it up after power on. In the first moment it seemed I blew up everything (CTPCI, Falcon, Ethernat since it smoked very hard and on the back side of CT60/SDRAM is black smudge, really scary) but fortunately it's "only" Ethernat. I've got two, so I could continue with tests but... again, be very very careful.

4. CTPCI TOS (1.04) starts with scary whie screen for about 1-2 seconds (depacking to RAM I assume) so don't panic, it's not the famous white screen we all know so well :)

5. "Copy TOS in SDRAM" does not work anymore with CTPCI TOS. I think it's because Didier ran out of space so he compressed TOS image in ROM and there's no way how to run it from ROM. If you disable it, boot message still says "TOS copied to SDRAM" but what's worse, NVDI raises some exception, i.e. does not work at all.

6. CTPCI and Ethernat really, really doesn't like each other. I think a lot of debugging will be necessary here. When I boot FreeMiNT, it looks more or less good but as soon as I try even simple ping, totally frozen system follows. Sometimes it happens even when I do nothing. Separately, CTPCI and Ethernat work well. Question is, if it isn't caused by my old(?) (see point 2) CPLD.

7. Rodolphe told me that IDE connector on CTPCI isn't yet activated, so don't try to mess with it (there's such option in CPX already).

More tests will follow as soon as I receive my Radeon from Germany.... if anyone (especially Didier and Rodolphe) may add some comment to these notes, feel free to do so...
