Hmm, on the DSP this pattern isn't used very much and my memory is completely broken but couldn't be the explanation that you're supposed to actually use DU > 0, same as DX > 0, i.e. rendering horizontally? But to me it looks strange, for instance you could want to have your texture mirrored and you're in trouble again.
Maybe CPU texture mapper experts like Evil can shed light on this?
