The register is word size, not byte. In ff893a, there are the bits for the left channel, in ff893b, there are the bits for the right channel:
XXXXLLLL RRRRXXXX
Some docs are wrong, but the above bitlayout should be right - at least this is what TOS 4.04 is using.
