It's not exactly the CPU time that is the problem with making a game in Spectrum mode, but rather that the colour palette is constantly changing and moving graphics around won't be very pretty then.

Doing a Spectrum animation is a no-brainer, just changing screenpointer and colour-data pointer once per vbl.

One example is the Enigma-demo fractal animation that is included in the Hallucinations demo by Reservoir Gods.
