From what I know, only 2 ways to detect joypads:
1. the clean way:
- As you said, check for _MCH cookie for Falcon or STE.
2. the not-so-clean way:
- read 0xff9200, if bus error, no joypad port present. That's what the Linux/m68k kernel does to check the presence of various hardware.
