For my streaming i use timer A. But you may just as well use the VBL (to avoid palette setting problems). My code stream has a constant bitrate and that, typically, is just 100 up to 150 dsp words per 50 Hz VBL. if you keep a decent buffer size and a high enough interrupt rate you should be really fine.
