Actually, all memspace up to 4mb is still the MMUs domain.
I suspect it still tries to read the non-existant memory. In which case the data you get might be related to the actual memorychips installed in the machine. (Memory chip revision & actual manufacturer)
You might get data read by the shifter, since the shifter is awarded every 2 memory read accesses.
Also, the bus is 16 bit, and reading a longword is likely to contain 2 16 bit values, not necessarily located next to eachother because of the above relation between the CPU/shifter memory accesses.
