The problem with synchro is probably the fault of resistors. The problem is that Atari machines accept different Vpp signals than standard monitors. For example when I connected Philips monitor to falcon I had to connect 68kOhm resistors for each signal (the same was with my STE). Get Chips'n'Chips(is it right?) hyp doc for complete description (it's seems that there is some kind of schema)
