I just compiled the latest mplayer in OSX, and with -vc help it tells me this about the vp6 codec (which is used for nectarine tv):
vp6 vfwex working On2 VP6 Personal Codec [vp6vfw.dll]
So it needs the windows files, even if you run linux. And it's x86 only. Sorry this doesn't make the format one bit more sensible..
