Hardware and software.. Well it's nothing very exotic I'm afraid.
On the Atari side I modify the STs to have phono sockets for audio out, and using a din13->composite cable.
The audio is connected to a behringer mixer and the video to a jvc digitizer , the audio is also routed to the digitizer via the mixer as well.
The digitized data is sent as a dv-stream over firewire to the video editing tool, which is final cut pro on a powermac dual-g5. The video is cut and exported as a dv-stream. The dv-streams tend to get a bit largeish, and a ready cut atariscene dvd before encoding is about 40GB.
The dv's are audio-normalised and then sent to the apple compressor software for encoding. Mpeg-2 6.4Mbit/s for the video and dolby ac3 for the audio.
At this stage the dvd creation itself starts, using dvd studio pro to create menus and navigation. I try to do the menus simple and space saving. The 2003/2004 ones are perhaps a bit too simple, the 1985-1988 have screenshots and submenus. The 2004/1985-1988 have chapters for mega demos to jump from screen to screen and the 1985-1988 have autoplay so you start the first demo and it will play thru the lot. From what I can tell, the 1985-1988 format is what will follow for the coming volumes as well.
Then the cover picture needs done, it's a 300dpi photoshop image. The covers are printed on a HP4650 or HP5500 colour laser.
Then it's the distribution left, I've done my best to simplify and streamline the handling to minimize effort. Duplication of discs is a pretty boring process thouigh :)
So far the left-over money has been used to sponsor outline 2004 compos with a few copies of the dvds and some have gone to support Atari.Org server hosting. But it's small sums all together, perhaps 50 euros or so, the DVDs barely makes it even, which has been the goal from start.
I hope that shed some light to the production..
