I don't agree that we aped the Amiga scene... I would say that the Amiga's hardware lent to doing certain things easily:
* 4 voice digi music
* 3D
* plasmas
Because it was comparatively easier, they did it earlier. Thus they developed tools such as the 4 voice soundtracker, which created a community of musicians. People trying on the Atari had... a square wave to start with. (I know, I tried! I made a slightly offtune version of Goldrunner if you need to know. I gave up soon after and made my soundtracker instead). That more than anything else explains the prevalence of SoundTracker modules in Atari demos.
Sure there were some conversions but they don't account for the majority of Atari demos. Sure the first star field may have been done on Amiga, but then it probably came from the intro to Buck Rogers in the 2? century, except they didn't get the popcorn bouncing off the camera right...
I would say the Atari and Amiga had about the same number of cool demos: I had both machines.
