  Mystic Bytes updates Duke 3D December 25, 2006

MiKRO of Mystic Bytes writes:

Hello 060-guys :)

I've found some while to bugfix duke, so here you are. The most important change is you don't have to rewrite cfg file anymore (for correct sound mixing rate), just choose the one in configuration program. Another thing is ikbd handler, mouse is now working for about 90% and it's more stable.

Enjoy the xmas with duke :)

p.s. i'd like to ask you ppl, do you find another ports reallych _such_ important for ct60? there's a possibility (except SDL things) to port let's say Hexen II or Descent (I, maybe II) but it takes a lot of time... i'd be happy to read your opinion on this topic in bbs board here at dhs... i'd like to code another (less boring :) stuff but in case 90% of ct60 users want new ports, i can change my mind :)

  Outline 2006 movie December 22, 2006

CiH writes:

Here's an early Xmas present, or possibly a very late release from the Outline '06 Party?

It's my camera movie footage, stitched together in a comedic muso-documentary format, with random moments taken from Outline, to give a five-minute 'taster' of the whole experience, or a nice reminder of those early summer days to the actual partygoers.

Anyway, go ahead and grab it (Quicktime format.)

  Nectarine demoscene radio is back November 12, 2006

The Nectarine demoscene radio collapsed a bit over a month ago. Failing hardware, bad ISP and busy admins. That's a perfect recipe for disaster, and Nectarine got silent.

Today Nectarine annouces that they are back, still in a limited fashion, but the streams are at place again. The entire site is being translated from ASP to PHP, which will take the admins more time to complete.

  Mystic Bytes releases Duke Nukem 3D for the Falcon October 23, 2006

MiKRO of Mystic Bytes continues to translate classic 3D PC-games to the Falcon. Now, the mega-popular Duke Nukem 3D have been brought over to the Falcon060!

Stats:

* 320x200, 256 colours
* VGA or RGB
* 24 kHz 16bit stereo sound

Update:
A small configuration error affecting sound playback needs to be manually fixed; in your duke3d.cfg, edit the line with 'MixRate = 48000' into 'MixRate = 24585'. The video download below suffers from the bad audio as well.

Beside the much awaited Duke Nukem 3D release, MiKRO have also released an update to the Falcon060 Quake.
New additions for v1.02:

* Triple-buffer support => smoother, flickerless rendering
* Palette update does in vbl only (not waiting for vbl) => smoother rendering
* Added 'loading icon'
* killed -frametime parameter, replaced with value from 200 Hz system timer

  Atariscene 1985-1988 DVD September 10, 2006

What we had hoped to have ready in february took a lot longer time that what we wanted. But now the Atariscene 1985-1988 DVD Video is finished and can be ordered.

The DVD features releases from the earliest Boink in 1985 to the Omega demo released the last day of 1988. We have footage of what we think are the first screens with lower border removed, left border removed, right border removed, total fullscreen and digidrum music.

This DVD is pure extreme oldskool. The ones looking for stylish demo presentations should head elsewhere :)

  Falcon060 Quake released by Mystic Bytes September 7, 2006

MiKRO of Mystic Bytes has released a new Falcon060 port of the classic PC game Quake by ID Software.

The port is especially made for the Falcon, so it's unlikely to work on clones or Aranym.

The features are:

* 320x200, 256 colours
* VGA or RGB
* 24 kHz 16bit stereo sound
* Full mouse support
* 68060 optimized rendering routines (by Frank Wille)
* TOS/MagiC/FreeMiNT friendly
* runs in 99% time in user space so you can use memory protection, background audio (yeah, you can run aniplayer and then quake...) etc.
* support for some Eiffel keys -- '~', PageUp, PageDown, Home, End, MouseWheelDown, Pause

Please note; you need the Quake datafiles on top of the archive below.

Update:
Some additional comment after testing the port; this thing is really well made. Totally playable even on a bare CT60/66-16, good synchronized audio. It shows what optimization can do; this thing runs faster than the Doom ports which of course should be the other way around. Additionally you can also download a short clip of Quake running on a basic CT60 66-16 configuration.

  Old Falcon game released August 27, 2006

Anyone remember Opium? No? Well a few might, they released some smaller Falcon demos a long way back.

However, unknown to most was that Opium was doing a Falcon game called 'Rave', which imitated the classic ST game 'Eliminator'. The recepie is rather simple: Create Eliminator with textured graphics, multichannel audio and lots of colours.

The result is quite playable, but with what many would call 'coder colours' today. Music seems to be ripped from Amiga (at least the intro ziks).

  UPX v2.02 released August 26, 2006

* Slightly better compression using the new NRV2E algorithm
* New options for compression tuning (e.g. '--brute')
* Various bug fixes

One of the nice features of UPX is that any of the supported platforms can crunch files for any of the supported platforms. Meaning your linux-server in the closet can act as a fast PRG-packer.

  Big Floppy People - quick report etc July 30, 2006

We arrived home a couple of hours ago after a looong hooot drive from Skåne in south of Sweden, which makes it about a 660km to drive, bluerk! Anyway, after a few days of harcore C-64 party and incredible heat with insane humidity, you're a wreck no matter if you drive for seven hours or not..

So, the Big Floppy People - a joint effort between the Floppy and Little Computer People parties was held during July 28-30 down in south of Sweden. An estimate of seventy-eighty people arrived, crammed up tightly in the hall. I don't think there was enough space for a single more computer. Getting used to comfortable parties again since last visiting LCP in 2004 it's definitly a big contrast to how these folks do their parties. The initial talk about unhealty, no sleeping area, showerless, few toilets and a partyhall of dirty concrete was of course true. Lamers as we are, we hadn't finished our contribs so having booked hotels in advance was a real GODSENT as we could get a bit of proper sleep. We higly recomend it to anyone going to LCP/BFP in the future :)

So, the party was mainly C-64, some Amigas, but very far apart. In fact I think we had more Ataris than Amigas there. For the compo, there were three Atari contribs; Timbral chipmusic, DHS Falcon demo and a surprise; an ST intro by The Ultra Crew - an old ST crew which made a comeback, featuring new chipmusic by Alchemist as well. Timbrals ST-chipmusic won the music compo, beating those Amiga protracker things and the DHS demo 'Derealization' won the demo compo, beating those Amiga 1200 demos ;-). The ST-intro from The Ultra Crew hit third place and put some Amiga efforts behind as well.

At the time of writing, we only have some photos and our demo available; Timbrals chiptrack will come up shortly once we have unpacked and set everything up properly. The Ultra Crew intro needs to be sent, we only have a non-final (pre-compo) version at our disposal..

Please notice that the videos of 'Derealization' looks quite a bit worse (jerky movement) compared to a real Falcon/VGA.

A few dots, a scroller, some rasters and something coming out of the speakers, which can hardly be described as music..

  Immortal 3 remix double CD out June 15, 2006

Gerry (The Thalion Source) writes:

It's the middle of the year 2006 and "Immortal 3", a double CD album presenting more than 150 minutes of the best game music arrangements from classic Atari ST/ Amiga games, is released by producer Jan Zottmann. Most of the tracks have been arranged by the original artists.

Jochen Hippel, known in the Atari scene as "Mad Max", presents a "Wings of Death" medley with a playtime of nearly 8 minutes, based on the music he did for Thalion's famous Atari ST/E shoot 'em up.

Besides, Jochen Hippel rearranged a track from Thalion's Amberstar. Ambermoon, Amberstar, "No Second Prize" and "Wings of Death" - all these Thalion games are featured on the "Immortal 3".

Other tunes making you turn up the volume of your cd-player are based on (but not limited to): Turrican II + III, Fire & Ice, Lotus 3, Speedball 2, Ghouls 'n Ghosts...and an orchestral interpretation of the Apidya main title.

"Immortal 3" is available from Synsoniq Records for 24,95 Euro. For a complete tracklist and ordering information visit the Synsoniq-homepage.

Along the lines of the title of Jochen Hippels CD I would recommend everyone who has an ear for high quality game music: "Give it a try"!

  Grazey releases a new ICE packer June 13, 2006

Grazey of the PHF have been working on a new ICE-packer which works as a ttp-file rather than the old gem/text hybrid.

The new version is easy to script from shells so you can do stuff like recursive packing. And, for multitasking users the ttp-ICE packs nicely in the background opposed to the old ICE which killed the mouse pointer and so on.

You need a Falcon060/66MHz to run it properly, VGA recomended.

When we realised that we once again (for the third year in a row) won't make it to Outline, we thought the least we could do was to make a little invite intro.

Outline Press Release
May 2nd 2006

In addition to the already announced activities, we are proud to present to you the first two live music acts to perform at the Outline 2006 demoparty, early june in Zevenaar, NL:

303f

&

gwEm

This is the first time Outline will feature live acts. We are excited to see the party develop in this direction, and predict that it will further enhance the atmosphere that our event is known for. A big "Thank You!" must go out to the involved artists, and the Demozone organisation for providing us with a PA setup. Without their assistance, it wouldn't have been possible to offer our registered visitors these shows free of charge.

Quote from http://www.303f.com/ :
"303f is a four-man live band creating electronic music they call atmospheric techno. Aiming to produce their own tracks and play them live on stage, they add uplifting sounds, melody and percussion to elevate regular techno to atmospherical proportions."

Outline 2006 opens it's doors!

Outline 2006 will take place from June 2 until June 5 in Zevenaar, The Netherlands. In recent weeks, we managed to sign a location that exceeds any previous Outline location in terms of quality. The organising team has been expanded, we've secured key facilities such as the partynetwork and proper audiovisual equipment. And last but certainly not least, we have assigned the pizza order system to Tinker once again. (Without telling him, ofcourse.)

Since every requirement for the party to take place has now been fulfilled, we're ready to accept pre-reservations for Outline 2006 tickets. Exact ticket prices are to be announced shortly. Depending on your choices, your ticket could be cheaper or more expensive than last year.

Those who pre-reserve a ticket will have the first choice of sleeping accomodations, once we have compiled the list with prices for these.

For more information on the (excellent) accomodation, please see the "Panoven" link below.

There's obviously been some interest on the dhs coding bbs, so i thought it would be nice to release "lz78" as a follow up to our recent datapacker based upon "lz77".

It should be more efficient regarding packing ratio while still offering a fair depacking speed. 68000 and 68030 versions of the decruncher are included and both optimized for size, so it should be an ideal solution for including data into 4k-, 96k-tros and so on.

  Introducing "Special feature" to dhs.nu January 14, 2006

We're glad to announce a new section to DHS.NU. Initated by gwEm as early as two days ago, we're already opening it. The "special features" will be used for articles that does not fit into the scene news for being too long or just unrelated. Updates of the special features will be irregular.

First out is a mammoth interview with Kalms of TBL, made by gwEm. Kalms speaks out about his Atari interest, TBL's way of creating those stunning demos we've learned to love each easter.

Happy reading!

  YesCREW updates software January 14, 2006

SWE of YesCREW writes:

After slight delay, v0.8890 of Graoumf Tracker is out. Main feature is CT60/63 compatibility and Backdoor to GEM. There are some problems still with BtG in MiNT, but in TOS it works perfectly. It allows user to jump out of tracker to OS, and do some things there... Also small control interface exist in GEM and it also support AVSERVER. Will try to fix MiNT issues ASAP.

Folowing the fixes to GT2 replayer, our puzzler Capy and Gem GT2 player are also updated and should be now 060 happy...

Take care, Janez

Update (two hours later):

OK, after a looong night i finnaly discover a bug, preventing to play GT2 modules in GemPLAY, while they play perfectly in GemGT2, using same routines.

Anyway, v1.00 of GemPLAY is here now. GemPLAY can play ACE Tracker modules (*.am), NoiseTracker modules (*.mod), Graoumf Tracker modules (*.gt2), Art Of Noise modules (*.aon), SNDH songs (*.snd, limited to TimerC songs) and XLR8 Tracker songs (*.xms, a tad unstable). Enjoy.

D-Bug 189....

Orbiter by Spectrum Holobyte, quite a rare game cracked by our occasional collaborator GGN/KÜA (yeah.. he coded the fab menu on 178!).

Other goodies include a nice Horizontal arcade game - "Well 'ard" (now fully unlocked thanks to the author),

"The Adventures of Alice who went through the Looking Glass and came back, though not much changed",

keen fans would have seen that on 188 v1 ;)

  .tSCc. releases Atari TT-conversion of Beams January 2, 2006

Ray of .tSCc. writes:

As sort of a new year's gift i'm presenting you the TT conversion of our EIL III entry, the beams demo. i basically ported the demo to prove the TT's strength as compared to the standard falcon - despite requiring an additional c2p pass and lacking the fast blitter gouraud the demo still runs remarkably faster, especially the lipsync part. It seems the 32Mhz and the full 32bit bus do the job here - and of course to release something for an underrated and underfed platform ;).

Extra special thanks to DMA SC for doing an excellent job on the MP2->MOD conversion of the soundtrack and Lance for coding his fast and HiFi mod replayer (which is, however, not yet free of bugs so don't wonder about notes missing, occasionally).

  bITmASTER releases DSPMOD as GPL January 1, 2006

MiKRO of Mystic Bytes writes:

I'm happy to announce well known replay routine DSPMOD for Falcon goes GPL! Bitmaster was so kind he released full source code.

What does it mean? You can use / sell / change / improve / bugfix this routine if you accept these conditions:

- you always release complete source code with all changes you did make to this routine to the public
- you always release the source code under GPL (or similar license) of the software that use this routine (i.e. you provide the source code)

For the full explanation see attached gpl.txt (in the archive).
