The old DHS demosystem used to have a GEM setup dialogue. The demo did as far as I can recall fsfirst() for filename.prg filename.app filename.gtp and if there was a match, show the gem setup. Otherwise draw a text setup instead.
Probably won't help you much, but it was a lame way (that worked..) to decide what mode to start up in.
